What is the format for the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup?

The 2024 Men's T20 World Cup is set to be the biggest in history, with 20 teams participating and a return to a previous tournament format. In the initial group stage, all teams will compete in four games, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Super 8s. The Super 8s will be held in the Caribbean and will feature two groups of four, with eight top-seeded teams to help with scheduling and logistics. This format aims to make the tournament more competitive and exciting for both players and fans.

If the teams in the initial group phase advance, they will be placed into either Group 1 or Group 2 based on their seeding rather than their finishing position. In the Super 8s, the top two teams from each group will move on to the semi-finals, with the winner of one group facing the runner-up of the other. Teams earn two points for a win, one for a no result, and none for a loss in both phases. T20 cricket does not have ties.

Who is competing in the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup?

In the expanded tournament, almost all major cricket-playing nations are taking part, with the exception of Zimbabwe, who did not qualify through their qualifier tournament. The 20 teams are divided into four groups for the initial phase of the competition:

Group A consists of Canada, India (A1), Ireland, Pakistan (A2), and the USA.

Group B includes Australia (B2), England (B1), Namibia, Oman, and Scotland.

Group C features Afghanistan, New Zealand (C1), Papua New Guinea, Uganda, and West Indies (C2).

Lastly, Group D comprises Bangladesh, Nepal, Netherlands, South Africa (D1), and Sri Lanka (D2).

What venues and stadiums are being used in the 2024 T20 World Cup?

The upcoming cricket tournament will be a historic event for the sport, as it will be the first major global competition to be held in the United States. A total of 55 matches will be played, with 16 of them taking place in the US. The tournament will be played at three different venues in Florida, New York, and Texas.

In New York, a brand new stadium has been constructed specifically for the tournament, complete with a pitch flown in from Adelaide, Australia. Additionally, temporary seating has been installed to accommodate the spectators.

In the Caribbean, several countries will host matches, including Antigua & Barbuda, Barbados, Guyana, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent & the Grenadines, and Trinidad & Tobago. The tournament is expected to attract a large and diverse audience and will encourage the growth of cricket in the United States and around the world.

What are the rules for the 2024 Men's T20 World Cup?

The tournament will be played in the T20 format, which means each team will play 20 overs unless they are bowled out or reach their target before then. Each innings will start with a six-over powerplay, and there are different fielding restrictions during this phase.

Matches are expected to last three hours and 10 minutes, with each innings allocated one hour and 25 minutes and separated by a 20 minute interval. A new rule, 'stop-clock', will be introduced, meaning the bowling side must be ready to bowl each over within 60 seconds of the previous one finishing.

Teams will be allowed two unsuccessful reviews per innings as well.
If both teams have the same score after 20 overs, they will have a super over to determine the winner. If the super over also ends in a tie, more super overs will be played until there is a winner.

In the group stages, a minimum of five overs per side must be played to have a result, but in the semi-finals and final, it's 10 overs. If a match is stopped due to weather, the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method will be used to determine the winner.

The first semi-final and final have a reserve day, while the second semi-final will have an additional 250 minutes of time allowed only.

If India makes it to the semi-finals, they will play in the second game.

Who are the previous Men's T20 World Cup winners?

Out of the eight Men's T20 World Cups that have been held so far, six different countries have emerged as champions. The winning countries are India, Pakistan, England, West Indies, Sri Lanka, and Australia. The West Indies has won the tournament twice, in 2012 and 2016, while England has also won the tournament once, in 2010. The most recent winner of the Men's T20 World Cup is Australia, who claimed the title in 2021.
